Embrional: "Absolutely Anti-Human Behaviors"

Getting up close and personal, sparring against the best of black- and death metal
A physical manifestation of chaos, the soundtrack to psychosis, could well be the soundwaves produced by Polish death metal outfit Embrional's debut album Absolutely Anti-Human Behaviors. A band four man strong, their music touches on various escatonic subjects and styles encompassing impressive range, covering both death and black metal influences over strong progressive tendencies.

The near constant blast beats mixed with the incredibly precisely picked guitars has a tendency to make the music sound a bit choppy, but it has the added benefit of shining a light on Embrional's blistering speeds and intricate riffing. That focus is both the band's strength and weakness in that it is all very complex and impressive, but also that it sacrifices variety, groove and accessibility in the pursuit of intricacy.

"The band is definitely strongest when they let go of all the seriousness and let loose currents more melodic like on the instrumental track Necropolis,"

And yet, even if Absolutely Anti-Human Behaviors lacks catchy riffs and variety, it grows on you. The technical skill of the band is part of what makes their music come alive and give it personality and character. There are plenty of details, clawing at you from the dark recesses they are hidden away in. The band is definitely strongest when they let go of all the seriousness and let loose currents more melodic like on the instrumental track Necropolis, but the fact that most others tracks are relatively alike to one another means that tracks like this become sort of out of place.

There's a lot of back-and-forth going on with Embrional's debut from 2012. This thing is good, this thing is bad, this thing is okay, this next thing not so much. The way they weave in the stringent dogmas of black metal with the edge-seeking behaviour of the death metal stylistics that lie at their core is a great source of variety, but seems mostly untapped in the grand scheme of things. The band shows promise but doesn't elaborate as much on their personal style as could be hoped for. Absolutely Anti-Human Behaviors is dense and solid at the core and definitely has a concise style and feel to it, but at the same time shows that there is room for a broader focus.

7/10
