Aortic Regurgitation: "Aortic Regurgitation"

Five ruthless broadsides from the East
I don't think anyone would argue against the impact bands like Metallica and Slayer have made on metal as a whole. While thrash metal was a while under way it has held its throne for years. Usually when it comes to thrash USA and Germany in particular come to mind. One thing is for sure, China is one of the places in the modern world you'd least expect to find it.

The thrashing duo aptly named Aortic Regurgitation might just cause a brain haemorrhage, or at the very least a mild seizure, with their five track debut EP of the same name. It's got everything it needs to work. Guitar riffs like a surgery gone awry, throat-tearing vocals like the screams of an unsedated victim and drums like a jackhammer to the chest. They share many traits with Morbid Saint. But there's a little bit of something else in there too, something a little less unrelenting. Like if Morbid Saint got control of their rabid hooks and made a more focused effort to kill you.

"They share the rough, uncontainable turmoil of Brazil, the furious anger of Germany and the stylised volleys of speed picking of the US."

The filthy vocals of lead singer Syn infect the mind of the listener with absolute brain-rupturing sonic terror combined with the thrashy riffs, reminiscent of the beastly thrash metal of South America. The Hong Konger duo succeeds in producing demonic fast-paced metal with elements of most regional scenes, creating a bastard child of clear malevolence and evil. They share the rough, uncontainable turmoil of Brazil, the furious anger of Germany and the stylised volleys of speed picking of the US.

Relentlessness, mind-terrorizing vocals and intricate riffs altogether make up for the obvious use of computer drumming, and Aortic Regurgitation - though the name sounds like death metal - delivers straight to the point filthy thrash metal from the far east. After listening to this manifestation of evil I'm definitely Damned to Serve.

8/10
